Scott C. Rissmiller, MD
Scott Rissmiller, M.D., is executive vice president and chief physician executive for Advocate Health, the third largest nonprofit health systems in the U.S., created from the combination of Advocate Aurora Health and Atrium Health.
He is responsible for the clinical enterprise, which consists of more than 21,000 employed and aligned physicians. Rissmiller implements processes and standards designed to make Advocate Health the “Best Place to Care” for physicians, APP’s and nurses.
Rissmiller previously served as the enterprise executive vice president and chief physician executive for Atrium Health, where he established himself as a leader in the field of telemedicine. Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, Rissmiller assembled and oversaw a team of operational and medical experts to create the Atrium Health Hospital at Home – a virtual hospital created in less than three weeks to house COVID patients, keeping tens of thousands of patients out of the hospitals to receive care instead in the comfort of their own home. Rissmiller also led the distribution of COVID-19 vaccinations to the communities served by Atrium Health, ensuring easy access for diverse, underserved and rural populations. Under his guidance, Atrium Health provided a national model for outreach to underserved communities and communities of color – including the elimination of disparities in COVID- 19 testing – and established a public-private partnership to hold mass vaccination events.
With more than 20 years of experience, Rissmiller first joined Atrium Health for his residency at its flagship, Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He also previously served as a hospitalist, leading the creation of the Carolinas Hospitalist Group and served as its president and as the system’s deputy chief physician executive.
Rissmiller serves on the board of directors for NC MedAssist, which helps ensure access to prescription medicines for underserved and uninsured populations. He’s also a board member of Atrium Health At Home Charlotte, which has an emphasis on home health, and is past vice-chairman of the board of directors for Carolinas
Physician Alliance. In addition, Rissmiller serves on the board for Riley’s Catch and is a member of the University of Georgia Magill Society.
Rissmiller’s expertise and insights are in frequent demand by local and national media, including Fox News, Bloomberg TV and the Wall Street Journal. In 2021, he was named one of the nation’s Top 50 Most Influential Clinical Executives by Modern Healthcare. He was also previously recognized as a Top 10 Hospitalist nationally by the American College of Physicians, and was named to Business North Carolina Magazine’s Best Doctors and Charlotte Magazine’s Top Doctors lists.
Rissmiller earned a bachelor’s degree in biology at the University of Georgia, in Athens and a doctor of medicine degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.
