NorthShore Edward-Elmhurst Health’s Moxi Robot: Reducing RN Turnover and Improving Caregiver Well-Being

NorthShore Edward-Elmhurst Health (EEH) is leading the way in improving patient care and caregiver well-being through innovation. Investing in two robots per hospital, the company partnered with Diligent Robotics to create the first autonomous robot, Moxi, to collect samples, deliver medications, and assist front-line clinicians.

In just six months, Moxi has made over 9,299 deliveries, returned 5,184 hours to staff, and traveled 1,583 miles—saving 3,597,047 steps in the process. Hiral Patel, DC, BSC, Innovation Program Manager, and Bonny Dieter, MSN, RN, Clinical Informatics Nurse, moderated a discussion on the robot’s utilization data, which revealed the robot is already resulting in a significant return on investment and reducing RN turnover by 1%, a savings of $270K annually.

The robots’ QR codes invite feedback from staff and have been met with enthusiasm. One nurse commented it was easier to utilize Moxi than to call an Uber! Change management was essential to ensure staff felt comfortable and trust in the robot. Through EHR integration, the project was a low lift. From a legal standpoint, Moxi’s sensors ensure it won’t bump into people or enter patient areas and recordings are not made.
