Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago Leads the Way in Remote Patient Monitoring

Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago has been on the cutting edge of healthcare for years, and their Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) program is leading the way. As part of their Telemedicine program, RPM involves wearables, sensors, implanted monitors, mobile apps, and patient-generated health data. Lisa Dykstra, SVP & CIO, Ravi Patel, MD, VP, Digital, and Dana Schinasi, MD, Medical Director, Digital Health and ACMIO, discussed how RPM offers patient/family and institutional benefits, and how transitioning to value-based care through remote monitoring can help.

The teams at Lurie’s have built on their existing EHR investment and seen patients become more engaged and trusting. Through MyChart Care Companion (MCCC), they’ve been able to assign education, provide reminders, outline individualized care needs, reduce cancellations and emergency department visits, and offer billing opportunities. Their goal is to provide a “one-stop shop” to leverage MCCC’s features and functionalities.

As technology evolves, Lurie’s principles of stewardship, efficiency, mission alignment and delivery guide their efforts. They focus on balancing value, effort and engagement for subsequent builds, and review patient symptoms/photos via MCCC for billing opportunities. They are looking ahead to populations and challenges to focus on next, such as cardiac transplant, asthma, rehab medicine, and health maintenance.
