Improving Clinician Wellbeing & Engagement: What Ascension is Doing

At Ascension, recognizing the importance of health worker wellbeing and its effect on patients, healthcare systems and communities as a whole is at the forefront of their efforts. To move towards personalized care, an engaged workforce is essential. Dr. Baligh Yehia, SVP and President of Ascension Medical Group, and Dr. Jennifer Stanley, Regional Medical Director of Ascension Medical Group, have identified five steps to address clinician wellbeing and engagement. These steps include identifying clinician wellbeing as a priority, establishing an infrastructure, developing tactical approaches, selecting a framework, and measuring, monitoring, and refining for greatest results. In 2019, when data measured 31 percent of Ascension’s doctors as ‘distressed,’ they have applied focused efforts and lowered that number to 20 percent in 2021. By utilizing a wellbeing index assessment and Stanford’s Model of Professional Fulfillment, their three main areas of focus are a culture of wellness, efficiency of practice, and personal resilience. At Ascension, they understand that the patient’s experience and the healthcare worker’s experience are both important. Through their five steps, they are striving to create an environment that encourages both clinician wellbeing and engagement.
