Ben Wandtke, MD, MS, President of Medical Staff, Chief of Diagnostic Imaging, FF Thompson Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center, and William Boonn, MD, CMIO, Healthcare Diagnostics, Nuance. Incidental findings are common and while most are benign, others represent early treatable forms of cancer. The management of incidental findings has historically been a source of frustration for physicians and patients alike. Recommendations for follow-up imaging tests, intended to identify the early forms of cancer are “lost” or never completed for 30-70% of patients, a result of inconsistent communication between healthcare providers and systemic and technologic limitations. A collaborative, system-based approach to managing recommendations can save lives, reduce liability, and generate new revenue. Drs. Wandtke and Boonn share advancements to “close the loop” using clinical analytics and practical methods that significantly improve healthcare outcomes.
